I’ve written about this in the past on other web sites. The argument that Linux and it’s vast array of “alternative” software is somehow equal to Windows or Mac for productivity is ridiculous.
Linux is a fine OS, well suited for server applications, especially web servers, and specific-use desktops, such as Internet terminals. However, when it comes to actually getting multimedia work done, you can’t beat Windows or Mac. I own both Windows machines and a Mac, and since I can run Adobe Photoshop on both, I can be equally productive.
Today, I stumbled upon this article. Really, that’s the best you can do? Another recommendation to use Open Office and then go get Gimp. I can’t even begin to count the number of times articles like this have made the front page of Digg. How many times does it take?
So I downloaded GimpShop today, and thought I’d whip up a quick graphic that I’d been meaning to do for a while. Step one was to create a rectangle. Guess what, Gimp doesn’t have a shape tool. No shape tool? You’re comparing it to Photoshop and it has no shape tool? Forget it. I’m done.
A program is NOT a replacement for another when it lacks one of the key elements to accomplish the same task. This would be like saying Windows Movie Maker is an adequate replacement for Final Cut Pro. It’s not, it’s on a completely different level.
